CollegeSpring works with schools and educators to help all students, not just the privileged few, to access high-quality preparation for college admissions tests. In this article, we explore the history of the organization and the vital work it carries out in assisting young people in underserved communities, helping them access educational support and improved opportunities.

CollegeSpring’s Founding

CollegeSpring was established in 2008 in recognition of the fact that although higher ACT and SAT scores are a powerful tool in boosting students’ college prospects, not all students receive enough support or encouragement to prepare.

Since its inception, CollegeSpring has supported 25,000 young people from low-income backgrounds, helping them to increase their SAT test scores by an average of approximately 104 points. Since test preparation is costly and beyond the reach of many low-income students and their families, CollegeSpring is committed to expanding its reach and deepening its impact.

Dr. Yoon S. Choi Appointed CEO in 2017

Under Dr. Choi’s leadership, CollegeSpring has implemented a strategic planning process, building on the successes it achieved over the previous 10 years.

The resulting 2019 to 2021 Strategic Plan established key objectives for each financial year. For 2020, CollegeSpring’s goals are as follows:

  • To innovate through technology by automating service delivery and manual processes, exploring differential learning options that enable teachers to serve students better, and piloting student-facing platforms to motivate and engage with students on a deeper level

  • To initiate partnerships and growth by working with local organizations, leveraging existing partnerships, and establishing new partnerships with local non-profits connected with college access and success to provide continuity of student services

  • To implement and connect on a greater scale by rolling out standardized program models across all regions and continuing to lay the groundwork to facilitate upscaling

English is a second language for 47 percent of CollegeSpring’s students, and 73 percent of its students are the first person in their family to gain college admission.

CollegeSpring’s Strategic Pillars

The strategic pillars on which CollegeSpring focuses are comprised of evolving the organization’s school-based program model, leveraging leading-edge technology, and investing in evaluation and research.

Between 2019 and 2021, the organization aims to raise $16 million in cumulative revenue, generating $5 million through its fee-for-service activities and a further $11 million through the generous support of its patrons.

Small Differences in Test Scores Can Majorly Impact Opportunities

CollegeSpring recognizes that ACT and SAT scores are critical to college admissions decisions. A small disparity can make all the difference in terms of selective institutions with improved financial aid, support systems, and increased graduation rates.

Meeting threshold scores enables students to save precious time and funds, avoiding the need for remedial courses upon entering college. In addition, studies show a strong correlation between SAT results and lifetime earning potential.

Test Confidence Is Vital in Achieving Personal and Academic Goals

Nevertheless, one test result does not define a student. Rather, it is a valuable opportunity to help that student unlock future opportunities.

Teachers can help their pupils grow their ability to assess strength and growth areas accurately, providing students with increased optimism and confidence and helping them to grow a healthy, responsible attitude toward education. Teachers can also help students develop approaches, habits, and skills that can be applied to future situations with potentially life-changing results.

Overall, the aim of CollegeSpring is to help students develop the tools and thought processes necessary to realize their true potential, unlocking the door to educational advancement and improved career opportunities.

CollegeSpring Can Increase College Readiness by a Factor of Two

Young people who complete the CollegeSpring program effectively double their likelihood of meeting or exceeding the College Board’s readiness standards in both literacy and math.

Four out of five CollegeSpring students report that they feel confident of attaining a college place since they are more prepared for the SAT.

Before completing the CollegeSpring program, 31 percent of students met reading and writing benchmarks. This figure increased to 55 percent after the program’s completion. Before completion, just 13 percent of students achieved math benchmarks, while 30 percent met or exceeded such benchmarks following successful completion of the CollegeSpring program.

CollegeSpring Works with 50 Community Organizations and Schools

Working predominantly in communities throughout New York, Southern California, and the San Francisco Bay Area, CollegeSpring collaborates exclusively with educators serving local communities that have historically been underrepresented in higher education.

CollegeSpring Provides More Than Just Test Prep

CollegeSpring’s founders and leaders recognize that doing well on ACT and SAT tests requires more than just tricks and tips. Students need to develop a comprehensive understanding of the college education process, as well as an appreciation of why tests matter so much. CollegeSpring helps students understand how a college education can increase their working opportunities and, ultimately, put their life on an upward trajectory.
